We began our new homeschool year on Monday.
I have been apprehensive about starting this school year because I wasn’t feeling as “ready” as I have in past years. Our move this summer really took a toll on us and it has taken much longer to get settled than it usually does. But, I set a date and by golly, I was going to stick with it! It helped that my husband was also starting his classes on Monday.
And sometimes, you can really over prepare and over think things as a homeschool mom. There comes a point where you just have to START.
And that’s what we did on Monday.
I have to say that it has gone much better than I expected. I did have very low expectations, but I am now pretty pleased with how our year is shaping up after just a few days under our belts.
We always take some time on our first day of school to take pictures and capture the occasion in a spirit of celebration.
This year, I will be teaching two fifth graders, a third grader and a kindergartner. Oh, that last one makes me sad…I want her to stay a baby forever and she just won’t do it!
That crooked grin of his and the orange around his mouth from whatever he was eating from before we went outside for pictures is so typical of my little boy. It may look odd and, no, it’s not picture perfect, but I’m thankful to have captured that bit of mess on his face because it captures the essence of who he is right now.
I only intended to post one picture of each of the kids, but Jenny…she is such a little ham that just one doesn’t quite do her justice. I’m so thankful for this girl that pushes boundaries and embraces life with everything, bring such joy and vibrant life into our family!
Beginning a new school year always takes so much adjustment from everyone. We have to get used to a new schedule and routine. We have to understand what is going to work and what isn’t. We have to work together and extend lots of grace.
I look forward to sharing with you over the next few weeks some of our plans for this year and some routines and such that are working for us (or not) this year.
In the meantime, through, I would appreciate your understanding that this homeschool mom gig is going to take a toll on my blogging. Teaching this brood of littles is my first priority and documenting our lives has to take a backseat to living our lives during this time of adjustment.
Our days have been long and full and I have been so tired at the end of the day…to tired for anything more than retreating into myself with a book to unwind.
In time we’ll find our routine and life we’ll find a new normal with this homeschool year.
I’m excited to see where it’s going to take us!
Are your kiddos back to school already or are you still enjoying the fruits of summer?

Have a great year! I’m gearing up to homeschool a 7th grade boy while working full time. Yikes! Lord give me grace!
