I decided to join Ali Edwards in capturing a day in my life again this year.
Last year was my first year capturing a day and I enjoy looking back at that one day snippet of my life. The album I put it in in unique to that special time in our life.
This year is completely different in that we live in a different state, a different house, Keith is in a different job and the kids are older. But it’s also a lot the same as far as homeschooling and the overall rhythm of our day goes.
Here’s what a normal “day in our life” looks like:
7:34 am // EA was up bright and early tackling some typing practice.
7:35 am // I got a really slow start on this morning after taking Nyquil on Monday night in an attempt to knock out a cold I have been battling. Unfortunately, I woke up still dealing with the cold AND medicine head. Coffee was a MUST this morning!
8:04 am // Jenny knocks on my bedroom door as I’m getting ready just to say, “I love you, Mommy!” She is such a sweetheart!!!
8:38 am // Breakfast for me included Special K Chocolate Almond cereal with a cup of tea.
9:15 am // Finally getting a start on our homeschool day after 15 minute clean up! I work on Math and Grammar with my older girls first. They had a test in math.
9:55 am // Math with Will. Math is his favorite subject. He was learning to read and write checks for amounts up to $99,999.99.
11:05 am // Kindergarten math with Jenny. She was working on calendar skills and “some, some more” stories using teddy bears and pattern blocks. Everyday during calendar time this month I ask her, “Jenny, what month is it?” Her answer…”Meptember”.
11:24 am // Working on Phonics with Jenny. We’re using All About Reading level 1 and she’s making lots of progress!!! I’m super proud of her!
12:00 pm // I made an early lunch for the kids and watched a free webinar on using Instagram which ended up being a complete waste of my time. It ended up being just a marketing scheme to get viewers to purchase an expensive “master class” on Instagram. I wish I had known this beforehand. I would have done something much more useful with my time!
1:18 pm // Afternoon school begins. The afternoon is filled with history lessons and read-alouds. I work with EA and MC first and then with Will and Jenny. Our current read-alouds are The Winged Watchman and Sticks Across the Chimney. We’re set to finish both of these books this week.
2:52 pm // Just finished reading to Will and Jenny.
4:41 pm // The kids played basketball outside while Keith studied and I made dinner. Jenny was sent to her room for not playing nice with the others.
4:59 pm // I finished a scrapbook layout while dinner was in the oven. Sometimes I have to find little snippets of creative time!
6:19 pm // Laundry…it’s a never-ending battle around here!
7:08 pm // Reading to Jenny before bed. She loves this time!!!
And I pretty much crashed after that last photo was taken! I’m trying to force myself to stay up until 9 pm in the evenings, but sometimes it’s a real struggle to make it that long.
I took all of my photos this year with my phone and posted most of them on Instagram. I think this limited the number of photos I took because I was concerned about “oversharing” and annoying my friends there.
My plan is to get these photos printed and put into an album soon. Most likely, I’ll be cropping all the photos into squares, adding text directly to the photos and putting them in a 4×4 Project Life album. I love those tiny little albums for mini-projects like this!
I am planning to participate in a Week in the Life in May, so this project helped me get a good look at my photography challenges right now and what I would like to improve in the next few weeks before taking that project on.
Some of the challenges I notice right away are:
- I did not include any photos of Keith or Keith and I together.
- The lighting in our current house is really bad…I need to find work-arounds for that, or just be more okay with it.
- I want to capture more of objects around the house, and more small moments.
- I want to take more photos with my DSLR.
I am really looking forward to taking a photography class next month to help out with some of these challenges!
Thank you so much for joining me in taking a look at a day in our life!
