Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and love is in the air! Kristen of We are THAT Family is hosting a blog carnival this week called SWAK (Sealed With a Kiss). I am going to take this opportunity to tell you about our love story. I’ll be posting about how I met Keith, our first date, his proposal for marriage, and how we plan to spend his leave, which is coming up very soon!!
I think excitement about how you met and the desire to share that with others is a great indicator of your level of excitement about your mate. When Keith was a pastor, there was an elderly couple in the church that was just in love with each other as they were in the early days of their courtship. In fact, I would venture to say that they were probably MUCH MORE in love with each other than in the early days of their courtship. I think they shared with me the story of how they met every time I visited with them. It was so sweet to hear them excitedly recount the story of how they met and fell in love.
One of the first questions I ask couples or just friends when we’re getting to know each other is the story of how they met each other. Each story is so unique and special. I can learn a lot about how a couple met and consequently fell in love.
Today I would love to share with you my own story of how I met my husband, Keith.
We met the summer before my senior year at Converse College in South Carolina. I began attending and got involved in the college ministry at First Baptist North Spartanburg, during college. I am so thankful for this church. I grew so much in my faith during my time there and I still miss it!
Anyway, Keith was also a member at First North and was singing in the choir. One of my favorite services was the Sunday night worship because it was more relaxed and my friends and I usually hung out and went out to eat together afterward. Keith began talking to me week after week following this Sunday night service.
I began to grow more and more curious about this guy that talked to me every Sunday night and looked forward to our brief chats. I also found out that his parents were active members of First North. In fact, his dad took the position of administrator of the Christian school operated by the church and I had a strange, pressing burden to pray for him throughout that summer. Little did I know that he would be my future father-in-law!
Now while my interest in Keith was growing each week, I also had not really dated anyone since my sophomore year of college. And I was completely content with that.
I was also gearing up for a very active senior year, working in the Dean of Students office, and with plans to serve as an Orientation Leader and Community Hall Advisor for the incoming freshmen students.
Our church was having a missions conference just a few days before the new school year and freshman orientation was to begin at Converse. I felt called to surrender my life to missions during that time. I didn’t understand exactly how, when, or where, but I knew that God had called me into ministry and I surrendered my life to that call.
Needless to say, I wasn’t necessarily planning on beginning a new relationship.
But I have learned many times in my life that God’s plans are so much greater than my own. SO MUCH GREATER!
After the last night of the missions conference, I saw Keith in the hall way and he asked me for my phone number. I wasn’t used to giving my phone number out to guys, but I didn’t hesistate (not much, anyway) to give it to Keith. But with the upcoming week I knew I would be busy, so I gave it to him with the warning of “I’m really busy, so good luck trying to get me!”
Yeah, I know…impressive, huh?
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post to find out how long it took him to call and what our first date was like!

At my steering retreat last summer, as we sat around at dinner the question came up of how our husband’s proposed. It was so awesome to watch the ladies faces as they told their love stories. As they told their stories no one could help but beam as she shared her story. It was such a special time. So, I agree, it is wonderful to hear your friend’s tell their love stories. And I am so excited dear friend to read more of yours! 🙂
