My favorite time of the day is those precious minutes spent reading with my children before bedtime.
We’re currently reading our first real chapter book, Rainbow Magic.
Every single night when we finish a chapter, EA looks up and says, “Let’s find out what happens tomorrow.â€
It’s fun to watch my little ones enjoy and even get lost in a story as we wind down at the end of the day.
Do you have a regular reading time with your children? Any good book recommendations?

I read-aloud to all of my kids throughout the school day. I read a chapter book first thing in the morning. I read for science, history, music and art appreciation when we do those subjects. I read to my youngest at bedtime every night, as well. She LOVES the fairy books. She’s read (and reread) all she could find at our area libraries. I buy them for her for bdays and Christmas. We are currently reading the Little House series. She has also enjoyed Cam Jansen, The Magic Tree House, and The Magic School Bus.

We have started reading chapter books. We are working on The Trumpet of the Swan, and the girls LOVE it. They ask for another chapter of the Louis Book every night. I have a few other chapter books in reserve like The Secret Garden, Charlotte’s Web, Little Women, and Stuart Little. I cannot wait to start them! I had forgotten about the Little House series. I wish I still had my collection.
The girls also like the Fancy Nancy books. These introduce more advanced vocabulary by explaining it with words they already know. I was told recently that we are missing some of the books and that we need to go to the book store. Hmm … good use for that allowence, I think. 🙂

I remember reading The Trumpet of the Swan to my students when I taught school and they really enjoyed it.
We have only read a few of the Fancy Nancy books, but they have really enjoyed them. I think we may need to get some more. And, yes, that’s a great use of the allowance for them!

Even though they’re not chapter books, my favorite stories when I was little were Fish is Fish and The Pea Patch Jig. In fact, I like them so much that when my boyfriend and I were visiting my parents the other day, I sat him down in front of the fire and read them to him! Another favorite collection is the Uncle Wiggily stories, especially the one about the “skillery scallery alligator.”
