One of my favorite Christmas traditions in our family is that of my husband giving myself and the children an orange and a candy cane in a brown paper bag each year.
It all began when my husband and I were dating.
We watched the portrayal of the excitement of Christmas gifts sent from their father away at war by the characters in the Little Women movie. We also visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC and witnessed the grandeur of how Christmas was celebrated there and read about how the children still received simple gifts such as an orange and a candy cane.
We want to remember to always be grateful for everything that we receive.
We are blessed with so very much that is can be easy to gloss over the simple gifts that are given and take them for granted.
That’s why I was so excited to see my little Jenny’s excitement over receiving her orange and candy cane this year. She chose the simple brown paper bag as one of her first gifts to open. And her face lit up at discovering the simple treats inside.
