I recently bought The One Year Devotions for Preschoolers book to go thorough with EA and MC. We have been reading a devotion each morning during breakfast. Each devotion also has an accompanying Bible verse and prayer that we recite and say together.
Yesterday’s devotion was titled “God Decides” and it was about how God decides the weather and many other things in our lives because he always knows what is best.
We discussed how God decides if it is going to rain or be sunny or if it’s going to be hot or cold each day.
The verse for this devotion came from Psalm 135:6
The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth.
The weather here in Baumholder is constantly changing. It is said that you can experience all four seasons in a day…and from experience, I can tell you that this saying is true.
It has actually been hot here this week…the hottest it has been all summer. And we have had thunder storms almost every night soon after the girls are in bed
Tonight as we were finishing dinner, it suddenly began to rain.
MC noticed it first. She said, “Mommy, LOOK, it’s raining!”
Then EA said, “God decides. Mommy, read about how God decides”.The rain that we were experiencing made her remember our morning devotion from yesterday!!!
I grabbed the devotional book and re-read yesterday’s lesson. We talked some more about how God knows best and how he decided that it should rain right here at this very moment. We also read through Psalm 135:6 again and recited the prayer, “Lord, you can make it rain or shine. What you decide will be just fine!”
Then both girls pulled stools up to the window and watched the rain coming down.
I learned a very important lesson from my girls tonight.
We often read Bible passages and devotions that may not speak to what we are going through at that exact moment. Maybe we’re just in a time of life when everything is going along just fine.
But even in those times, it is imperative that we hide those lessons in our heart.
It is imperative that we are constantly and consistently reading God’s word and hiding it in our hearts. That we are memorizing scripture and studying His Word.
Because the rains will come.
Life is sometimes just plain unfair.
We will experience hurt.
We will have pain.
We will have unexpected surprises.
We will be sad.
We will be lonely.
We will have rains and even storms.
But when these times come, we must be prepared to turn to the lessons that we have been taught and the words that we have hidden away in our hearts as EA immediately did tonight.
When she saw the rain, she remembered the lesson she learned that “God decides”. She didn’t question the rain, she knew that God’s knows best.
And she asked me to point her back to that lesson.
When life’s unexpected realities come at you, do you turn to God’s Word and his promises that you have learned in the past?
Take the time now to hide His Word in your heart and study the lessons there so that you will be prepared when the rains of life come.

What a great post! It did remind me that when I read the Bible and I have trouble connecting it with my life at the moment, that maybe that isn’t what I’m meant to do. Thanks for the reminder!

That is a wonderful reminder. Children know where to turn for the answers, sometimes more than we do.

I love hearing children recount Bible lessons.
They are sponges and really do watch and listen to what we teach.
What a great reminder that I need to be sure I am teaching my girl about Christ through my every day life. Thanks.
