This weekend my husband, Chaplain Andrews, made homemade sushi for the very first time.
He saw a fellow soldier make some when they were downrange in Iraq during his last deployment and decided that he should learn when he came home.
His reasoning….”How hard can it be if it can be done in Iraq??”
Over the past few weeks he has been gathering all the needed materials and ingredients he needed to make the most basic rice sushi.
The plan is for him to move on from there.
I am so proud of him for doing something that was truly challenging for him….you see, he never ever cooks. Ever! Well, not anything that requires him to be too close to the stove burner. Microwaving he can do without a problem.
With just a tiny bit of help and advice by me, and his book Sushi: Taste and Technique by his side, he successfully made some very delicious rice Sushi.
And I haven’t eaten sushi since it made me sick when I was pregnant with Will….over three years ago!

Oooh – did he add anything to his rice? Someone gave me a recipe with sesame oil – but it’s just not got that yummy Kimbap (Korean Sushi) taste…*sigh*…

Nice job Keith!! I loooove homeade sushi, okay, I just love sushi. I told you about my best Japanese at Campbell…well, her and her sister used to make me homeade sushi! I miss it and this made me really hungry for some! Too bad you’re not supposed to eat it pregnant…or that Germans don’t really know how to make it!

What a fun and yummy tackle! Great job Keith! I am impressed he picked something so eccentric for his kitchen debut. I would have been a bit nervous myself. I am not a fan of sushi, but do think I’d like rice sushi… it’s the uncooked fish kind that frightens me!

YUM! Can he come cook for me? I am the only one in my house that would eat sushi. Mike absolutely abhors Asian cooking in any form. Enjoy!

I never thought of making Shusi until recently when one of my daughter’s friends said she makes it herself and eats it all the time. I didn’t know you could make it with something besides raw fish.
