When Keith and I were newlyweds, I learned how to make homemade bread. I used a honey-wheat recipe then and it was really good.
I think I actually baked bread twice, for a special dinner, and that was that. I nearned a new skill but never practiced it. In fact, I bet it’s been at least seven years since I’ve made a loaf of homemade bread.
That is, until today.
I’ve really had a big hankering (don’t you just love that word) to make some bread for the last few months. But there was always a good excuse not to. Or maybe just an excuse, I doubt most of them could be considered “good”.
I decided that today would be the day, though.
I settled on a recipe for plan white bread. I really wanted to make a bread that we can use on daily basis. I doubt I’ll be giving up buying bread from the commissary anytime soon, but who knows….
I found what looked to be a great recipe on 50’s Housewife. She even had a picture tutorial that I followed to help with the process.
My favorite part of the whole bread-making process is kneading the dough. I have a kitchen aid mixer, but I do prefer to do this myself….it’s such a great arm exercise!
I happened to have on hand a highly rapid rise yeast instead of an active dry yeast, so I had to watch the rising time carefully.
Other than that, I’d say that everything went pretty smoothly.
There is nothing that tastes better than fresh homemade bread straight out of the oven….NOTHING! MC, EA, Will, and I shared a few pieces topped with butter…YUMM!
Of course, I forgot to take pictures along the process, but I do have pictures of the delicious end product.
Do you see the brown crusty piece on the very top?? Yeah, of course I had to pick it off and it was the very best part!
Baking this homemade white bread was probably the best tackle I’ve had. I’m so glad that I took the time to do this today.

YUM!! I LOVE homemade bread – what a great tackle! I bake bread from time to time, but I’m going to get a little more serious because next week I’m finally getting a grain mill!! I’ve been saving for months to be able to grind fresh whole wheat – can’t wait!! 🙂

I recently did the same after months of wanting too. The recipe I used would also make really good pretzels. I plan on making some later this month for a special just The Husband and I night.

That bread looks so good, I can almost taste it! I have baked bread in a bread machine, but never the real way. I think I am intimidated by it. Perhaps I will attempt it this summer. Way to go girlie!!

I haven’t made bread by hand for a while, but I frequently make it with my bread machine. Your bread looks so yummy that I might just have to make some today… 🙂

Love homemade bread! Of course, I cheat and make it in the bread machine. Not that making it from hand would be that much harder – but then I get to multi-task while it’s mixing and baking and only have to peek on it from time to time. 🙂
