Just last week as I was talking to EA, I realized that it’s almost time to start our new homeschool year.
I decided early in the summer to wait until after Labor Day to start our new school year to give Jenny time to get into a better routine. She will be three months old by then. (How can that be??)
When Jenny was born a little earlier than expected I was thankful that I would have the entire summer to get ready for school, but the summer has flown by and the new school year is quickly approaching.
That’s why I am excited to be participating in the Not Back to School Blog Carnival again this year. This is going to give me the extra motivation to get working and focused on getting ready!
This week’s theme for the blog carnival is Curriculum Choices.
We decided to continue using Sonlight along with some extra supplements. I really enjoy Sonlight’s focus on literature and am thrilled with the variety of excellent books that we will be reading this year.
So…here is a detailed look at the curriculum choices that we have made for the 2010-2011 homeschool year.
Will (age 3)
Confessions of a Homeschooler’s Letter of the Week Curriculum
EA & MC (age 5)
Sonlight Core K with Readers K 4 Day (this includes History, Read-alouds, and Readers)
Science K Program – 4 Day (Biology, Botany, and Physics)
Math – Saxon K
Handwriting – A Reason for Handwriting K
Supplemental Language Arts: Explode the Code Books & Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading
Calendar Time using ideas from 1+1+1=1
Also, I am going today to sign EA and MC up for a ballet and tap dance class…so excited about that!!!

Hi! I’m here from the blog hop. 🙂
We have never used a boxed curriculum like Sonlight, but I love to see the pictures of all the materials and I always smile when I see many familiar titles. Lots of great books there!
Have a great year!

Monica,
This is wonderful. If I could have a “do over” with Cameron I would have definitely used Sonlight. Some friends of ours in Baumholder used it and were very pleased.
What an exciting year a head!

Thanks, Lori! I am really looking forward to this year, although I am a little nervous about how the school year is going to go with a baby in the house. I have been very pleased with Sonlight as well. They’re book selection is incredible!

Mighty Minds is great – my (now 7yr old) loved it! He also did the same Sonlight curriculum. He’s now in 2nd grade.
best of luck this year!!

I’ve heard great things about Singapore for Math and really debated between that and Saxon. I went w/Saxon just because I’m more familiar with it.

I have heard such great things about Sonlight, but have never done a boxed curriculum. We are using Handwriting Without Tears, but I’m curious what A Reason For Handwriting is like. I’ll have to check that out.

I am using mostly Sonlight curriculum (literature, vocabulary, history book selections, and Apologia Science ) this year with Caroline, with Abeka history (she loves their history), and the Algebra course we are doing, recommended by Homeschool Enrichment. We are also going to do for writing a course called How to Write the Novel Way….we are excited about this, because she should have a novel at the end of the year. I know my girl is a lot older, but thought you might like to see what we are doing as well! I have heard lots of people that are happy with Explode the Code for supplements.
Monica says
Thank you for sharing what you’re doing with Caroline this year. It sounds like you have a great year planned!! The writing course sounds like a lot of fun. Tell Caroline that I would love to read her novel when it’s written!
We did two of the Explode the Code books last year and we all really enjoyed them!

Sonlight is too expensive for us, but I can’t help but drool over all those books! 🙂
Have a great year!

Thanks for the link to the calendar stuff on 1+1+1=1, I can really use that! I want to do more of that this year than we’ve done in the past. I like the Reason For Writing, we’ve used that several times in the past. My 7yo is going to be using the 2nd half of the 10yo’s Transition book that she didn’t finish, but I haven’t decided whether or not to buy another one for the 10yo.. it’s so tempting just to have them write their own scriptures and sentences down on notebook paper (since it’s significantly cheaper.) 😉
Monica says
I want to really take advantage of the calendar resources on 1+1+1=1 this year. I printed everything at the end of last year, but it never actually made it onto poster board and we never really used it. I’m thinking that should be this weekend’s project.
I think you may be onto something with giving them the copy work (scripture and sentences) for handwriting myself. Maybe that’s what we’ll do in the future.
Thanks for commenting!!

Thanks for sharing your curriculum plans with us all on the Blog Hop. This will be our first year of using Sonlight and it has been fun for me to see all the different moms who will be using it as well this year. 🙂
Blessings,
