Today was a day of changed plans.
One thing that I have learned having three small children is that sometimes you just have to roll with the punches and “go with the flow”. How’s that for using two cliches in one sentence?
Anyway, we had plans all week to take the kids to the Frankfurt zoo today. It’s something that both Keith and I have been looking forward to doing with them.
But yesterday afternoon I began to realize that those plans probably needed to be postponed.
The AC in our van hasn’t been working and it hasn’t been a problem until this week. In Germany there is approximately two to three weeks of actual summer where the weather is hot and humid.
This week is the first of those few weeks of summer. And driving without an air-conditioner has not been fun. At all.
Yesterday I had to make a quick trip to Ramstein, about 30 minutes away and I was completely miserable.
So, after talking to Keith last night, we decided to postpone our trip to the zoo until the weather is a little cooler again or we get the air in our van fixed.
We decided that instead we would take the girls and Will to the track. We have a very nice track here that is great for running, walking, or for the kids to ride their bikes, or just run around and play.
Will recently got a new tricycle and today was the perfect opportunity for him to try it out.
Or so we thought.
A thunder storm came up after we had been at the track about half and hour. We quickly packed everything up and headed home.
To console our children who were not ready to leave the fun time they were having and who were also scared of the very loud noises coming from the sky, we opted to have an indoor picnic.
It was a hit!
The kids enjoyed eating their lunch on the floor with Mommy and Daddy. We were able to talk and laugh together during our picnic lunch as we listened to the thunderstorm outside. Will kept pointing to the window as if it were the culprit in making those loud, scary noises. Thus, the girls decided that we needed to get new windows.
Sometimes plans have to change. It’s a fact of life, especially with small children. But I have found that as long as you keep a good attitude along the way things work out just fine….sometimes even better.

We’ve rolled so many times that I think we could design our own coaster! I am so glad that you were able to salvage the day with a fun activity. That is one to keep in the back of your mind for another “ruined” afternoon.
We’re fighting the heat and humidity with a backyard design project. The girls and I are researching what we need to have in the backyard in order to attract birds to the feeders they want to put out. So far we are all enthusiastic and excited about what we are learning.

Nicely done! It’s great that you had a great day and didn’t let it get you down. I’m sure they’ll remember their indoor picnic for a long time to come. 🙂
How did he like the tricycle? I was thinking of getting my youngest one for her second birthday. Somehow I missed the boat with the older two and didn’t get them bikes till they were older, but with watching the big kids on their bikes she is eager to be like a big kid. So, I was pondering the tricycle issue and wondering if 2 was a good age and what trikes were good.
