Our “40th in the 40’s” military Ball was this Saturday and it was so much fun!!
I have been looking forward to it for a long time. One of the things I’ve looked forward to in being a part of the Army family is participating in the traditional, somewhat formal events. I wasn’t able to attend the formal ball that was held at the end of Keith’s CHOBC class, so this was actually my first Ball.
The day started with decorating the ball room. The decorations went along with the 40’s theme. There were war posters hung around the room and the tables had glass frames with pictures from the 40’s. There were also candles and flowers adorning the tables. The organizers of the Ball did a wonderful job keeping everything simple and tasteful!!
After helping with the decorations, I went home for a quick lunch and then out to have my hair done. I have found a wonderful salon, Jung, in downtown Baumholder. Right after I sat down, I noticed that my friend, and FRG leader, Casey was there to have her hair done too. So, I was able to have some girl time with her!! In the spirit of playing along with our theme for the evening, I asked for a 40’s style updo. The poor stylist said she hoped no one came in and thought that was the only style she could do.
After returning home, I had a couple hours to get ready at a relaxed pace. The girls were very interested in what I was doing. Mary Catherine even joined me in putting on make-up.
Our friends, John and Jessica, came over to watch the girls and Will. I am so thankful for their friendship. The girls absolutely LOVE them!!
We arrived at the Ball about 30 minutes into the cocktail hour. I was able to speak to and visit with lots of friends. All of the ladies were GEORGEOUS!! I loved seeing so many dressed in 40’s dresses, make-up, and hair!!
There was a buffet table for the meal and cake and coffee for dessert. During the formal portion of the evening, each company gave a presentation related to the 40’s. I especially enjoyed the lesson on sports in the 40’s and the rendition of “Boogy Woogy Bugle Boy of Company B”. An award was given to the couple who best represented the 40’s era. And lots of prizes were given out by raffle.
After the formal portion, the dance floor opened!! We didn’t stay terribly late, because we had to get home to the kids. My first Ball experience was better than I hoped for, though and I am definitely looking forward to many more during Keith’s career.
OH, I need to thank BigMama for her help in finding the perfect shoes to match the dress I found at overstock. Unfortunately the dress didn’t fit (too big in the bust, thanks to nursing). I found another dress shopping in Heidleburg, Germany that was perfect, and had the perfect shoes to match it right in my closet!
