On Wednesday Keith and I put the kids in hourly daycare and headed out to our favorite German city, Trier.
On the way there I remembered that they were building a new inside mall before Keith deployed which meant that it should be finished after fifteen months. It was a nice surprise to find that it had been finished and it was conveniently connected to the parking garage that we always use in Trier.
I’m sure it sounds like a pretty simple thing to you, but inside American style malls are a rare thing in Germany. It is nice to know that we have that as an option on cold and rainy days when we would like to get out of the house.
Our mission for the day was to find a ball gown for me to wear to our upcoming Batallion Ball in July. I am proud to announce that I found a perfect one. We found it at Zero, the same shop where I found a dress for our Brigade ball last year. It was decided that it will be our first stop from now on when I need a ball gown.
I’ll have more to say about the ball and lots of pictures in a few weeks.
While we were walking along the street in Trier, we were able to go into the Trier Cathedral (Dom St. Peter) which is the oldest church in Germany. On our visits to Trier before Keith left we weren’t able to go into the cathedral with the children. It was so pleasant to be able to leasiurely walk through this cathedral, looking at the beautiful architecture, ancient relics and works of art.
These shots do not come close to capturing the beauty of this place. It was breathtaking and humbling to be in such a magnificent church.
Here’s Keith standing outside the west facade of the cathedral in our obligatory tourist shot.
Inside here is the Shrine to the Holy Robe, which is believed to house the robe that Christ wore during His crucifiction.
We’re assuming that this sculpture is referring to the Grim Reaper. But we could also be totally wrong on that assumption. I couldn’t find any information specifically on it. But it is intricate art work.
Can you imagine coming face to face with this image of Christ’s crucifiction when you enter into worship? Just being there, standing before it was amazing. Trier Cathedral is still a working cathedral today, with services held throughout the week.

When we were there in Trier last year I remember being slightly undecided about whether or not to pose in front of buildings. They are so beautiful that I didn’t want to mar that… but like you said… it’s sort of obligatory to take pictures near them 🙂

Wow – my husband and I often talk about how “new” the US is – it’s amazing to see pictures from Europe of these amazing old buildings that are older than any structure we’ve ever seen!!
