My friend Jess’s baby turned one this week and we were invited to the birthday party today. One year old birthday parties are so much fun. The babies are so precious and cute and there is lots of excitement about that memorable milestone.
Here’s the birthday girl with her Mommy and Daddy today…isn’t she the cutest??
EA and MC have been excited about going to Makayla’s birthday party all week. Well, not really all week because I didn’t tell them about it until Thursday. I’ve learned that you have to do that with four year olds. But they have been super excited since then.
EA’s very first words upon waking up this morning were, “Is it Saturday?” And then, “Yay!!! It’s Makayla’s birthday!!!!” She even went in to talk to Will when he woke up this morning, saying, “Guess what, Will? Today is Makayla’s birthday!!!!” I’m sure he could have cared less.
But not my girls! No there was nothing on their mind today except celebrating baby Makayla’s birthday.
I took them with me shopping for her gifts and they helped pick out a Corduroy Teddy Bear that reads and some books.
They were so antsy until it was time to go to the party. EA even baked her own imaginary cake to take there.
As we were getting ready to leave I thought about how I can really learn a lesson from their excitement.
A lesson about truly being more concerned for others than myself.
It wasn’t their birthday that we were celebrating but that didn’t matter for them.
They were truly excited about something beyond themselves. And that makes me so proud of them as their mom. It’s that kind of selflessness that I want more of.
My birthday is coming up in a little over two weeks. It’s not a huge celebratory birthday for me (32), but I don’t know that I’ve ever had this much excitement surrounding my special day.
EA and MC have been talking about “Mommy’s birthday” for well over a month now. And I didn’t even tell them about it. I think they just reason that I’m the only one in the family that hasn’t had a somewhat recent birthday celebration.
So, they are more excited about my upcoming birthday than I am. It is a topic of conversation on a daily basis. I have a pile of birthday cards made by my girls. It’s their favorite craft at the moment. And their excitement is making me a bit more excited myself.
