I started taking the girls and Will to Preschool Story Hour at our library last year and we enjoyed it so much. Mrs. Bailey, the volunteer that does it, is just wonderful! The kids love her because she is so good with them. She puts a lot of work into this time…everything is planned out and organized. And that makes the teacher and mommy in me so pleased!
She went home to the states for the summer and we have anxiously awaiting her return. Another librarian tried to do the program in her absence, but she wasn’t a good reader, didn’t have plans, and it quickly turned into a waste of our precious time.
I happened to see our Mrs. Bailey at a meeting I attended on post yesterday. As soon as I could I asked her and she confirmed that she was back and doing story hour again. I could hear how excited she was about her plans for the fall. She’s starting out by focusing on concepts such as colors, shapes, and numbers. Today’s books and craft were all about colors.
I couldn’t wait to get home and tell the girls that Mrs. Bailey was back!!!
We were all thrilled and couldn’t wait to get to the library this morning.
As I said, the books that were read this morning were all about colors.
She read…
Blue Goose by Nancy Tafuri about farm animals who decide to paint the farm while Farmer Gray is on a trip. It teaches all of the primary colors and secondary colors. The colors in this book are so vivid and well….colorful!
and
Birds by Kevin Henkes is an introduction to birds focusing on their basic features such as colors and sizes. EA is fascinated by birds, so this was her favorite. Before Mrs. Bailey read this book she asked the children if they liked birds and EA immediately raised her said and shouted out “I do!”
After the read-alouds, the children made color collages. They each had their own colored construction paper with the color’s name printed at the top. They glued on a pipe cleaner in the shape of the first letter of the color’s name, beads, plastic bugs, buttons, and foam letters and numbers. She even had them switch places and work on each other’s collage.

As we were leaving the library I noticed a flyer for this month’s upcoming book club. They are reading Julie & Julia, a book that I have been wanting so see since the movie wasn’t available here. I watched all the hype in the blogosphere and on twitter when the movie came out.
By the way, have any of you seen the movie or read the book? I would love to hear your thoughts!
Along with being excited about this particular book, I am so ready to take part in a book club. It has been years since I have been in one! I was in a book club with friends from church before I was pregnant with the girls…It was so much fun for me. I LOVE to read!!
The library had ONE copy of the book available for check-out. It was my day!! And the club will meet on September 24 to discuss this book. I need to get reading!
If you are in the Baumholder area, I would strongly encourage you to check out the Preschool Story Hour at the Library. It’s on Thursdays at 10:30 and really is an excellent program for your little ones! And if you’re a reader, look into the book club as well. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Hi Monica! Love your blog – 🙂
I read Julie and Julia last month and just to warn you, there’s a lot of foul language, which is a shame because overall I thought the book was pretty good and in a way, very inspiring to set out and try something you haven’t done before.
Our small group at church just started a ladies book club and for our first meeting, we’re reading The Red Tent. That was a really hard read to get through – wasn’t especially thrilled with it. Hoping the next pick will be better!
Have a great rest of the week!

How fun! I’m looking forward to the day when Brady is old enough to appreciate the library. I can remember every summer as a little girl, I would go for weekly story time and then my mom would let me check out 3 books to read that week! I remember spending hours browsing books, thoughtfully making my selections. Great memories!

I also read Julie and Julia, and was very disappointed with the language. It really detracts from the story. I also thought that there were parts of the book that just didn’t fit, sections I would read then say “Why was THAT in there? What was the point of that story?” It is worth the read though as the storyline gave me lots to ponder.

I’m going to repeat what’s already been said. The language in J&J was overwhelming to me. I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’ve never heard such words…. I spoke that way once… long ago. But, it SO detracted from the book. It was very difficult for me to get past it, so I passed on the book.
