I have decided to use Capture Your 365’s monthly photo challenges to take more pictures and grow my photography skills.
I get these e-mailed to me daily, but you can also download the monthly challenges in PDF form here.
Yesterday’s prompt was “A Tree”.
Many of you know that we recently moved to Texas. One thing we had already heard and noticed right away about Texas is there there aren’t a lot of trees. Especially not the forests of pine trees I grew up with in South Carolina.
But there are some trees.
In fact we have exactly two trees in our front yard.
Admittedly, they are palm trees which we think are pretty much dead.
I wonder if dead trees still count as trees?
And, how do you go about reviving said dead looking palm trees in the desert of El Paso?
Sarah K says
those are either Mexican Fan Palms (also called petticoat palms) or Chinese palms. They should be very hardy down there in El Paso. Almost looks like they got hit with very cold temps. The good news is that the stems are still green. DO NOT cut off any fronds until they are completely dead – with no green. It is your only chance to save the entire tree. Hopefully with spring coming some new fronds will pop out and you’ll know if they will survive. Those fronds are heavy and have very sharp needles at the base so be very careful handing them.

Thanks for the information, Sarah! I’m going to keep a look out for those new fronds!! I think the winter here was pretty harsh…there was one snowfall and I don’t think that’s the norm.
