We visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City today and had the best time exploring and soaking up some amazing works of art.
We love visiting art museums in the cities that we’re living in. Keith read about this one and we wanted to take our niece, Sydney, with us to visit it while she’s here. We were all so excited to get going on this adventure as soon as Keith came home from his classes today.
The outside of the museum was absolutely beautiful with it’s expansive sculpture park and luscious green grass.
Keith, the big girls, and I loved walking through the exhibits and galleries in the museum. I loved reading the stories behind the paintings, especially in the neoclassical time period in England and France.
The girls loved the Egyptian exhibit and the Early American and Native American art. Those especially tied into what we’ve been learning about in homeschool over the last year or so.
Will and Jenny were not as enthused about looking at painting after painting, but I was proud of them. They contained their energy as best as they could throughout our time in the museum. Will piped up a bit when we got to the knights.
They were both beyond ready to be free to run about in the field at the sculpture park.
And that is EXACTLY what they did!
I loved seeing this quote engraved on the building…
True painting is only an image of the perfection of God.
Those are words to spend some time pondering over for sure.
The thing that struck me the most as I walked through the museum is how each painting represents so many different stories. You have the story of the artist, the story of the person commissioning the work of art, the story of the culture and people who lived in the time period of the art, and you have the story of the art itself, just to name a few.
I love the time we get to spend exploring new places and I’m so thankful for our afternoon spent exploring the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City today!
