This week my husband received good news…news of upcoming promotion.
I am proud of him, of his work, of the efforts he has put in, of the ministry he has been called to and how he is doing it.
I celebrate this wonderful news to him.
On Wednesday as I was at a lunch with other chaplain wives, at two different times, someone walked up to me and said, “Congratulations!”.
My immediate response was confusion.
“Congratulations??? huh? I’m not pregnant.”
This happened both times.
Apparently the only time I’ve heard those words spoken of me, to me, in the last many years is at the announcement of pregnancy or the birth of a child.
It was humorous to have that response.
But it also brought me to some very vivid realizations.
It is when we are confronted with the truth about ourselves that we see most clearly, most vividly.
Motherhood doesn’t have many accolades. There aren’t promotions or raises to be had.
But this is a job that is worthwhile and honorable.
It is one that must be celebrated.
Maybe I need to congratulate myself more in this life of homeschooling, diapering, and housecleaning.
The other realization I had, this one even more vivid, is that my husband and I are one.
On the day we said our I dos, we ceased to exist as two individuals, but became one.
When he receives congratulations, I do too.
I can be congratulated at his good news, because it is mine as well.
This post is being linked to 5 Minute Friday at The Gypsy Mama. On Friday mornings, I take time to write for five minutes, no editing, no backtracking, no over-thinking…just writing.
This time is something I look forward to each week.

I totally agree with this! Marriage makes two into ONE. His successes are my successes.

I think in a marriage, we can receive congrats on behalf of each other because we work together to become all we are.

So true!! Loved this analogy. We DO need to pat ourselves on the back and congratulate each other more. Good food for thought for me to encourage others and help them in this journey.
