I have had quite the week…but today really takes the cake! I mentioned earlier that on Monday I used my respite hours to run some errands. I got a break today as well and decided to use my time to do something special just for me.
My friend and our senior adviser, Amy, wrote me last week wanting to keep the kids for a few hours one day in order to give me some time to myself. I decided to take her up on her offer…I think I would have been CRAZY not to…and I scheduled an appointment to have my hair cut and colored.
I am pretty particular about my hair. It’s therapeutic for me to sit in a nice salon while someone pampers me.
I tried a salon here in Baumholder and was very happy with the stylist I had, but she has recently moved to the states.
So…off I went to the Find It Guide (my handbook for all things German) in search of another salon. The stylist I had in SC gave me some advice on how to find a *possible* good salon through the yellow pages, I figured it may work for the Find It Guide too.
The very first advertisement under “Beauty-Hair Care” was for Sandy’s Hairstyling Salon in Kaiserslautern. It was advertised as “The British Salon with American Style”. I took a look at their website. It was in English and pretty impressive.
I grabbed the phone before I could talk myself out of it and made an appointment.
I have gone back and forth between being excited and nervous about today’s adventure since I made the phone call. I scheduled a hair cut and highlights. I have only let one other stylist put color in my hair, so this was a HUGE undertaking for me.
Amy came at 9 this morning, and I prepared to leave for my 10 o’clock appointment with much anticipation. When I plugged the address into my GPS I immediately realized that it was going to take me a bit longer than I planned to get to the salon. I would just make it in time…I hate being late, so this just added to my nervousness.
I pulled into the parking lot at exactly 10:01…one minute late…
My stylist greeted me when I walked in the door and welcomed me. She said she would be with me in just a few minutes and I was immediately impressed with her FLUENT English.
The language barrier was one of my biggest fears about the day. In my book, it’s pretty important for the person cutting and coloring YOUR HAIR to be able to speak your language.
When I explained that I just wanted light highlights and a small trim she completely understood. I came prepared with the latest issue of Digital Scrapbooking Magazine and I began to read and relax as she worked. She even offered coffee with cream and sugar in a pretty little cup and saucer.
I knew the drive was worth it as soon as she revealed the finished highlights….just what I wanted! She also did an excellent job with my cut and style!
I left the salon TWO HOURS after I arrived. I couldn’t believe she took so much time, but I felt so pampered!
I came home right before time to put the girls and Will down for their naps. They had an awesome time playing with Amy. That’s all they talked about all afternoon!
It was really such a treat for me to spend an entire morning doing something just for myself. I am so thankful for the support from the friends I have here.

You look wonderful! I’m so glad you have a support system that is helping you. Since I’ve retired, I haven’t been to get my hair touched by anyone in over a year. I miss those times.

Time for ourselves is SO important. When my son was small we lived away from family and it was hard finding good friends. You’re blessed!
