We set out on our drive from El Paso, TX to Ft. Leavenworth on Friday with lots of bittersweet anticipation and excitement.
Unfortunately, this was one of the worse PCS travel experiences we’ve had.
Several hours into our drive on Friday, in 100 degree heat, the air conditioner in my van went out.
And then a little bit later, after switching out Jenny for Will in my hot car, it began to rain. Then it began to rain really hard. Then hail started falling out of the sky…hard and fast!
We had to pull over out of the road as our vehicles were pummeled with hail. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever lived through. I told the kids to bend over and cover their heads and I did the same, all the while crying out and praying for protection.
God answered my prayers and we survived safe and sound.
Our vehicles are another story…both had dents all over them and my windshield has three huge cracks.
We were able to drive to the next exit and pull over to wait out another approaching storm at a gas station.
The next day of our travel was, thankfully, much less eventful. It was a long and excruciatingly hot drive, though.
We were relieved to finally make it to our hotel room late Saturday afternoon and enjoy a day of resting on Sunday.
We checked into housing at Ft. Leavenworth bright and early Monday morning and waited in line with lots of other Army families just arriving to find a house on post.
We were given the keys to three available homes to take a look at. After looking at all three, we chose the first house on our list. It has four bedrooms, a good sized basement, and a large master bedroom closet and bathroom. It’s a small little duplex that will be a bit of a downsize for us from our home in El Paso, but I’m looking forward to simplifying.
We love our neighbors and the kids especially love visiting the park behind our house. This will be a spot that we visit often.
I’m looking forward to our new adventures here at Ft. Leavenworth.

So glad to hear you made it. Sorry about your air going out and the hail. Praying insurance will help fix the damage. Happy you get to move in so quickly. Hopefully your things will not be far behind. Good luck with the unpacking.

Happy to hear that you arrived safely after all the nasty weather. Your new home looks very cute and cozy. Love the front porch. Having a playground nearby is perfect. Love that there is a basement — great storage for sure. The kids have really grown, Jenny for sure! Hugs.
