After nine hours of traveling home from Garmish on Saturday, I stepped into quite a surprising welcome home.
Yes, I did say nine hours of traveling….Eight and a half to be more exact.
Some say they can make it to Garmish in four of five….not us.
We stopped to eat lunch once.
And we were stalled in lots of traffic jams, staus as the Germans call them.
I am so thankful for the portable DVD players that keps our children entertained during the long drive.
So, yes, we had a super long and painful drive home. We left Edelweiss at 10:30 am and arrived home just in time to run into the commissary for fresh milk, cereal, and bread before it closed at 7:00 pm.
And thank goodness that we did stop for the cereal and milk because that’s what we were forced to have for dinner.
Because that’s the only food we had left in the house after I had to throw out the entire contents of our refrigerator.
I walked into the house and thought something smelled funny.
As I walked into the kitchen the smell got stronger and my questions as to why were answered upon opening the refrigerator and freezer doors.
My first thoughts were “That’s strange….refrigerators aren’t supposed to be dark….Why isn’t the light working?”
And then….”Oh no!!!! KEITH!!!!”
Apparently the lights went out sometime during the week while we were gone and when they came back on, the refrigerator didn’t.
Keith was able to flipped a switch in the breaker thing and it came back on.
But it was way too late.
I had to throw out everything that was sitting inside of the refrigerator and freezer.
EVERYTHING.
Well, everything except a few frescha drinks to be exact.
So, as Keith brought up suitcases and bags from the car, he would take down a trash bag full of melted, ruined food.
Until the whole thing was cleaned out.
I lit candles, cloroxed out the freezer and refrigerator, washed everything in the kitchen down, mopped the floor and went to bed a tired mommy after a long day. Today I’ll be making a trip to the commissary to stock up on all of our refrigerator and freezer staples.
But I am choosing to look on the bright side of things….at least I have a clean fridge now.

UGHHH!!! So sorry that happened to you….especially after such a long traveling day. Ever since Carol came home from a vacation to find that a water pipe in their front yard had burst and flooded their house in two inches in water (ruining the brand new floors her husband had just installed!), I always have someone come by every two or three days to check on things like that while we are away. Good luck refilling the fridge – it’s not fun and not cheap having to “rebuy” all that stuff. We had to do that after Hurricane Katrina. But like you said, at least you have a nice and clean refrigerator! 🙂

Oh no!! How awful.. =( The closest thing I’ve ever had to go through was when our fridge died and we could only save whatever we could fit in a cooler. It was the pits! Glad your fridge is okay though, that would be even worse.

I can’t imagine how exhausted you must have been! That is one of my biggest fears–something happening to my fridge or deep freeze.

Oh no! How frustrating! Glad for your clean fridge (and great attitude) though!
Mom All Day - Robyn says
Oh I’ve been there! And your right, the only good thing is the clean fridge/freezer because honestly the only time anyone is going to clean a fridge is when it shuts down and ruins the food! Who wants to shut it down on your own just to clean it! LOL
