When my babies were newborns, especially my preemies, I watched them for growth.
I took them in for check-ups anxious to hear that they had gained an appropriate amount of weight {whatever that is}.
I wanted to know that they were thriving.
I still desire to see them grow, but in different ways.
I’m not as concerned about their weight gain or even in height, but I desire to see them grow in wisdom, in love, in faith, in compassion.
I desire to see their hearts grow towards God, looking to Him as their Heavenly Father.
The growth that my heart desires to see in them cannot be measured with a scale, but I can see it each day.
I see it as they show concern for one another.
I see it as they love and care for others.
I see it as they pray for the little and big in their lives.
I see it as they choose to obey my words.
I see it as they come downstairs in the morning…all dressed and chores done…on their own.
I see it as they read words that were foreign symbols not so long ago.
I see it as they commit God’s words to memory.
I see it and my heart rejoices that their hearts, their spirits, are growing and thriving.
This post is written for 5 Minute Friday. I look forward to this time each week so spend just 5 minutes writing words from my heart.
In the words of The Gypsy Mama, these words are written, “
For fun, for love of the sound of words, for play, for delight, for joy and celebration at the art of communication.
For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.”
The topic this week was Growth.
Visit 5 Minute Friday at The Gypsy Mama to join in!

What a beautiful post! And a great reminder to look for those small signs of growth each day… they are such nuggets of encouragement for both the parent and the child. 🙂 I love your Friday posts… you really are a gifted writer Monica!

and this is how I grow spiritually when I read the words written by Christian moms – all the way through seminary – all throughout my Christian life I learned from words written by men – just about everything you wrote about your babies – I can see God writing about us – only a mama could write this – only a mama has access to this kind of understanding about God. Thank you. God bless and keep you and each and every one of yours Monica.
