I went with themed shaped cakes for Will and Jenny’s birthdays this year.
I took one Wilton cake decorating class when I was pregnant with EA and MC over eight years ago and had to drop out because I was sick. BUT I did learn out to make the little stars that cover shaped cakes. So…this is the extent of my cake decorating skills.
Will had a Star Wars themed party since he is obsessed with Star Wars right now. I searched everywhere for a shaped pan. I fount a Wilton Darth Vader shaped pan, but wasn’t crazy about making an all black bad guy cake for Will’s birthday. I also found some old R2D2 shaped pans by Wilton being sold on E-Bay for way too much money.
Finally, I landed on a small silicone R2D2 Birthday Cake Mold.
It was exactly what I had in mind!!! I was a bit nervous about using a silicone pan, but it did just fine.
With just a few colors, this cake was fairly easy to decorate.
Will sat by my side as I piped out hundreds of buttercream icing stars and he was thrilled with his cake.
Jenny began asking for a Dora cake as soon as she realized that she had a birthday coming up.
This shaped pan was fairly easy to find at my local Hobby Lobby. I had to be a little creative with the colors since they did not have the official set of Dora colors, but I was able to improvise and my little girl was tickled pink with her Dora cake as well.
I was so excited to make these two cake for my little birthday people last week.
The Dora cake took 2-3 hours to decorate with all the color changes and I had a sore wrist and arm afterwards. But the look on Jenny’s face as she saw Dora come together was worth every bit of effort.
I had decided that from now on I am making birthday cakes the day before their birthday so that I can enjoy looking at my creations before they are devoured.

I LOVE the R2D2! As you probably saw of FB, I did the Darth Vader cake for Nathan’s birthday last year. It was hard to get the icing black enough, and then it was hard to make a contrast to pipe the details. I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen Darth Vader, but (and this may sound gross) Jerry got 3 cake mold pans out of a trash can on his route. (for those who may not know, my husband runs a trash route, He IS the trash man– not just randomly going through other people’s trash!) You would not believe what people throw away! A little hot water and bleach, and they are fine to use. I have Darth Vader, Tweety Bird, and a football helmet now, and since Nathan’s pan was free, I didn’t feel bad at all buying the barbie pan for Rachel. 🙂 Anyway, that’s my Star Wars cake pan story. 😉 Just had to share.
Love your guts, sweet friend!

Your cakes are awesome, you should be proud. I usually spent a lot of time doing invitations, favors, etc so I usually get store bought cakes to match whatever theme we are having. Walmart has so many choices. But I appreciate when someone else makes a great cake!
